“Revolutionizing Indigenous Healthcare Access in Saskatchewan”

Date:

A new collaboration between the Battle River Treaty 6 Health Centre and the Saskatchewan Health Authority is revolutionizing healthcare access for First Nations communities. This partnership has brought a physician to local health clinics in three communities – Little Pine, Poundmaker, and Sweetgrass, eliminating the need for individuals like Melanie Kahmahkotayo to travel long distances, take time off work, and endure lengthy wait times to see a doctor.

Kahmahkotayo, a member of Little Pine First Nation, went without a family doctor for almost twenty years due to these barriers. With the new healthcare model, she can now receive medical care in her own community, improving her health and overall well-being. As an Indigenous physician fluent in Cree, Dr. Cora Mirasty emphasizes the importance of cultural understanding in building trust with her patients. She aims to provide meaningful and productive care tailored to the needs of First Nations individuals.

Patients like Lucy Whitecalf and Brooke Cameron have faced challenges accessing healthcare services, including encountering racism within the system. Whitecalf, from Sweetgrass First Nation, eagerly welcomed the opportunity to have a local doctor and even asked if she could designate them as her family physician. Cameron, a member of Poundmaker First Nation, highlighted the discrimination Indigenous people often face in healthcare settings, emphasizing the need for equitable treatment and respectful care.

Despite past negative experiences, Cameron remains hopeful about the future of healthcare with providers like Dr. Mirasty offering personalized and attentive care. Having a physician who listens and understands their needs without judgment has the potential to break down barriers and improve health outcomes for Indigenous patients.
