Brazilian authorities have apprehended a 22-year-old individual working as an escort, accused of drugging and stealing from tourists, including several international visitors. The arrest took place in Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone, following a series of scams dubbed “Goodnight, Cinderella.” Cláudio Rafael Silva de Queiroz de Pontes was apprehended by officers from the Special Tourist Support Police Station (DEAT) and Ipanema’s 13th Precinct.
The suspect, who allegedly masqueraded as a male escort, was wanted on two outstanding arrest warrants related to robbery and criminal association. He was apprehended in Cabo Frio, a coastal town in Rio’s Lakes Region. Authorities believe Cláudio is part of a criminal group that specifically targeted tourists, particularly homosexual men, using dating apps to entice victims to meet at beaches or bars.
Upon meeting the victims, the gang allegedly drugged them with spiked beverages before stealing their cash, phones, and other valuables, often depleting their bank accounts through transactions and withdrawals. Three suspected accomplices, two men, and one woman, are currently on the run.
One incident occurred in May when a Mexican visitor encountered Cláudio via a dating app and agreed to meet at Ipanema Beach. After consuming drinks, the visitor passed out and was later assisted by local vendors who took him to a nearby police station, as reported by Brazilian outlet G1.
In subsequent incidents, an Italian man was victimized in June, losing a substantial sum of money after being drugged. Two Chilean tourists fell prey to a similar scam in Copacabana in August, losing a significant amount between them. Another ongoing investigation involves a man from Pernambuco who lost his phone and a substantial sum of money after socializing with a gang member at a hotel on Avenida Atlântica.
Detective Patrícia Alemany, leading DEAT, stated that the gang purposely targeted men they believed to be affluent. She emphasized that the perpetrators used their appearance to lure victims, many of whom were foreigners or older individuals. Alemany explained that at times, the gang did not even charge for the meeting, as they identified the victim as having financial resources.
Law enforcement efforts continue to capture the remaining suspects. Cláudio is currently detained at the José Frederico Marques Public Prison in Benfica and is expected to attend a custody hearing soon. Authorities have not disclosed his statement, and attempts to reach his legal representation have been unsuccessful.
