Rory McIlroy has endorsed a new award to recognize the top DP World Tour player in the Majors annually, with the stipulation that he himself cannot claim the prize. As the Masters victor, McIlroy made history as the first European to achieve the career Grand Slam in Augusta this year. The award, named the Rory McIlroy Award, will honor the DP World Tour member who excels in all four Major Championships during a season.
Despite his accomplishments, McIlroy is ineligible to win the award. He expressed his satisfaction with this decision, stating that it was collectively agreed upon. This accolade marks McIlroy as the fifth player to have an award named after them on the DP World Tour, acknowledging his exceptional performances and unwavering support for the tour.
McIlroy, reflecting on the honor, mentioned his previous pursuits of accolades such as the Sir Henry Cotton Award and the Harry Vardon and Seve Ballesteros trophies. He expressed his excitement for the newly established award bearing his name, recognizing the top DP World Tour player across the year’s Major Championships.
At 36 years old, McIlroy joined an elite group of golfers by completing the career Grand Slam. Following discussions with DP World Tour’s CEO Guy Kinnings after his Masters triumph, McIlroy felt both honored and humbled to have an award associated with his name on the tour.
The accomplished golfer is currently aiming to defend his title at the DP World Tour Championships and secure his fourth consecutive Race to Dubai victory, potentially surpassing his shared record with Ballesteros. McIlroy praised the significance of sustained excellence in a competitive field and acknowledged the challenges of maintaining success over time.
McIlroy’s recent performance in Abu Dhabi has further solidified his lead, positioning him as a strong contender for victory. With a positive outlook on his game, the world No.2 anticipates maintaining his momentum in the upcoming tournament.
