“Royal Canadian Legion Adapts, Attracts Younger Members”

Date:

The Royal Canadian Legion’s Billy Bishop branch in Vancouver’s Kitsilano area has been actively engaging in new initiatives to attract younger members. A mix of traditional veteran gatherings and innovative events, like yoga classes, are drawing in a diverse crowd, including individuals like Hannah, who find a sense of belonging and connection through the Legion’s activities.

Branches nationwide are adapting to welcome a broader demographic, with efforts to provide affordable meals, community events, and a welcoming atmosphere to all, regardless of military background. This year, in celebration of the Legion’s centenary, first-time membership is free, further encouraging new faces to join their ranks.

Nujma Bond, the national spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Legion, highlighted the organization’s commitment to supporting veterans while evolving to embrace new ideas and members. The Legion has seen a significant increase in membership, with over 100,000 new members welcomed in 2026, pushing the total membership beyond 300,000.

Despite success stories, some Legion branches have faced closures due to financial challenges. However, branches like the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, have managed to thrive by evolving their offerings, including affordable meals and concerts open to the community. Plans are underway to expand their services by offering affordable housing units on Legion grounds to ensure sustainability.

Dennis Mills, president of the Bala Legion, emphasized the importance of attracting new members to ensure the Legion’s continued success in serving the community. As the organization looks towards the future, the focus remains on evolving to meet the needs of a changing society and maintaining a vibrant community hub.
