Ryanair will implement a new policy requiring passengers to utilize digital boarding passes exclusively starting next week. The airline recently announced this update to inform customers in advance of the significant change taking effect on Wednesday, November 12. After this date, passengers will no longer have the option to obtain and print physical paper boarding passes.
Instead, travelers must utilize the digital boarding pass generated through the “myRyanair” app on their mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets, during the check-in process to board any of the airline’s flights. Ryanair highlighted that the majority of passengers, approximately 80% out of over 207 million yearly passengers, already use digital boarding passes. However, this change will impact around 40 million passengers who prefer alternative methods, including printing their passes.
Dara Brady, the chief marketing officer of Ryanair, emphasized that while the majority of passengers are already accustomed to digital boarding passes, those who still opt for printed passes should download the myRyanair app before the full transition to digital passes on November 12. Brady stated that the shift to fully digital passes will provide a faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly experience for passengers. Additionally, it will offer easier access to various innovative in-app features, such as ‘Order to Seat,’ live flight information, and direct updates during disruptions.
Ryanair assured that this transition will lead to reduced airport costs, resulting in potentially lower fares for all passengers and saving approximately 300 tons of paper annually. The airline addressed concerns from customers who worry about potential issues with digital passes, stating that assistance will be provided at the airport in case of smartphone or tablet loss, battery depletion, or technical failures before boarding.
For passengers without smartphones, Ryanair confirmed that they can still receive a free boarding pass at the airport if they have completed online check-in beforehand. The airline also mentioned that as long as passengers have checked in online, the digital boarding pass will be accessible regardless of mobile signal availability.
