The sibling of Axel Rudakubana, the individual responsible for the tragic events in Southport, addressed the public inquiry by expressing concerns that his brother posed a threat to a family member’s life.
Speaking from an undisclosed location via remote connection at Liverpool Town Hall, Dion Rudakubana recounted messages he had sent to a friend in 2022 during a visit home from university. He shared his apprehension about the potential for harm if Axel were to become violent, highlighting the risks associated with such behavior.
Dion disclosed that he harbored suspicions that Axel may have previously attempted to harm their father, although he could not confirm this. When asked if he feared for a family member’s life, Dion responded affirmatively, stating his concerns if situations were to escalate.
Despite his apprehensions, Dion admitted that he never alerted anyone about his worries, as he believed the issues were developing gradually and did not warrant immediate action.
During previous interactions with Axel, Dion described their conversations as intense, attributing this to both their autism spectrum disorder. He also mentioned a shift in attention from their parents towards him due to his neuromuscular disorder diagnosis, which caused tension between the siblings.
Reflecting on their childhood, Dion mentioned instances of physical altercations with Axel, which he considered typical for young boys. He noted a change in Axel’s behavior following their relocation to Southport, particularly after transitioning to Range High School, where he exhibited despondency and violent outbursts.
Dion, a core participant in the ongoing inquiry, emphasized the need to explore potential interventions by public sector agencies to prevent such tragedies. The inquiry revolves around the events of July 29, 2024, when Axel Rudakubana carried out a mass stabbing at a venue in Southport, resulting in the deaths of three young girls.
Addressing the circumstances leading to the incident, Dion highlighted Axel’s expulsion from Range High School in 2019, which contributed to his increasing isolation from friends and family. Axel’s admission of bringing a knife to school and violent behavior played a pivotal role in his expulsion.
Dion mentioned that his last interaction with his brother occurred in the summer of 2023 as the inquiry continues to investigate the events surrounding the tragic incident.
