A skateboarder known for his daring stunts tragically passed away in an unexpected turn of events after being stung by a wasp. Andy Kessler, a prominent figure in New York City’s street skate scene, revolutionized the sport by introducing ramp techniques for skaters to perform more complex tricks. His career took off in the 1970s when he joined the renowned Souls Artists of Zoo York graffiti and skateboarding group.
In a heartbreaking incident in August 2009, Andy, aged 49, fell ill while assisting a friend in constructing a deck in East Hampton Town after a wasp sting. Rushed to Montauk Medical Center, which was closed, he was then transported to Southampton Hospital, where he was declared deceased. According to Moose Huerta, a close friend, Andy suffered a fatal heart attack triggered by an allergic reaction to the wasp venom, which can lead to severe complications like anaphylaxis or heart failure if not promptly treated.
Reflecting on Andy’s legacy, fellow skateboarder Chris Nieratko expressed disbelief and sorrow, emphasizing Andy’s profound impact on the skateboarding community. Andy’s dedication to the sport led him to advocate for skate parks in New York City, with his efforts resulting in the construction of various facilities across the city. Despite facing challenges like a major injury in 2005 and financial struggles due to lack of health insurance, Andy’s resilience and passion for skateboarding never wavered.
