A recent report by consumer group Which? reveals that despite the popularity of major mobile networks like EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, smaller competitors are outperforming them in terms of overall service quality. The survey, conducted with over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, indicates that lesser-known networks offer better value and customer service.
The study aimed to assess how well providers meet customer expectations. It found that the traditional “Big Four” – EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone – are falling behind many smaller rivals.
Leading the rankings were Talkmobile, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Among the major providers, EE ranked highest at ninth place, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks.
Price was a significant factor highlighted in the report. Customers on the Big Four networks paid an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, compared to just £9 for users on smaller networks.
Despite the lower prices, smaller providers often utilize major networks’ infrastructure, ensuring comparable signal and service quality without the premium cost associated with well-known brands. Switching providers is also more straightforward than commonly thought, with some customers able to switch networks in as little as 10 minutes.
One Which? member shared their experience of leaving O2 for SMARTY, saving around £200 per year after their bill increased from £17 to £27. Natalie Hitchins, Which?’s Head of Home Products and Services, noted that smaller providers consistently excel in customer service and affordability compared to major mobile firms.
The report’s full rankings show Talkmobile leading with 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile at 81%, Giffgaff and SMARTY at 79%, and Voxi at 79%. The scores highlight the trend of smaller providers delivering better value and service quality, urging dissatisfied customers to consider switching for improved benefits.
