“Struggle for Affordable Child Care in British Columbia”

Date:

Ella Dalling has been waiting for a daycare spot for her nine-month-old daughter Murph since early in her pregnancy. Despite applying to around 20 daycares in Vancouver, Dalling has not received any responses. In British Columbia, where daycare fees are unregulated, monthly costs can range from $200 to $2,000.

Facing the high demand and fluctuating prices, parents like Dalling have limited options but to wait or actively reach out to daycare facilities. Recognizing the challenges in the current system, Dalling has created an online platform called Little Scout, connecting parents with available daycare spots.

A recent report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives highlights B.C.’s struggle to provide universal affordable child care compared to other provinces. The province’s child-care landscape consists of a mix of private and non-profit operators with varying fee structures, making it difficult for parents to estimate costs accurately.

Despite some progress in child-care funding agreements, B.C. remains behind in implementing a $10-a-day child-care plan, a model already adopted by six provinces and territories. While savings for B.C. parents have increased following funding agreements, they still fall short compared to provinces with fee caps.

The delay in implementing the $10-a-day program has raised concerns among advocates, with some criticizing the B.C. government for not keeping pace with other regions. Education and Child Care Minister Lisa Beare acknowledged the need for a more inclusive and sustainable child care system, leading to a temporary pause in expanding the $10-a-day program.
