Summer McIntosh claimed her first-ever gold medal at the Pan Pacific swimming event by setting a championship record in the women’s 400-meter individual medley in Irvine, California. She outpaced Australia’s Jenna Forrester, clocking in at four minutes and 28.01 seconds. Forrester secured the silver medal with a time of 4:31.50, while Agostina Hein from Argentina settled for bronze at 4:32.54.
McIntosh, from Toronto, expressed her satisfaction at winning for Canada, although she believed she could have performed even better. She acknowledged the learning experience and mentioned the need to analyze her race splits to identify areas for improvement.
Following McIntosh’s victory, the Canadian national anthem resonated through the crowd, particularly captivating a group of enthusiastic youths in the stands. McIntosh appreciated the support and excitement from the spectators, emphasizing the honor of entertaining and inspiring others through her performances.
Later in the competition, McIntosh contributed to Canada’s bronze medal in the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay. Despite trailing behind Australia and the United States, the Canadian team, which included Mary-Sophie Harvey, Emma O’Croinin, and Brooklyn Douthwright, secured the podium finish with a time of 7:52.74.
In other events, Tristan Jankovics and Lorne Wigginton represented Canada in the men’s 400 IM, finishing in 7th and 8th place, respectively. Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsushita set a championship record in this event. Additionally, Taylor Ruck achieved a fifth-place finish in the women’s 100 free.
Furthermore, Meg Harris of Australia triumphed in the women’s 100 free, while Ruck garnered three bronze medals in different events on the opening day of the competition. Alexanne Lepage of the University of Calgary achieved a personal best in the women’s 100 breaststroke, showcasing a strong performance alongside teammate Sophie Angus.
The Canadian team displayed solid performances across various events, with notable finishes by Ingrid Wilm, Oliver Dawson, Javier Acevedo, and relay teams in the men’s competitions.
