“Teen Rugby Player Endures Brutal Assault, Seizure”

Date:

A young individual was viciously attacked by a fellow player during a rugby match, resulting in a seizure and causing severe facial injuries and emotional distress.

The assault took place as Nathan Wellings, aged 17 at the time, was participating in a match for Bolton Rugby Union Football Club against Rochdale Rugby Union Football Club in a home game in October 2021.

During a court hearing at Bolton Crown Court, it was revealed by prosecutors that the assailant, Antonio Embalo, became enraged during the game and repeatedly kicked the victim in the head. Embalo, now 21, received a community sentence as a consequence.

In a statement read in court, Nathan, who has since become a firefighter, described the challenging recovery period following the attack, which included numerous hospital visits and mental exhaustion. He expressed feelings of embarrassment and insecurity due to the physical aftermath of the assault.

Nathan labeled the incident as “life-altering,” lamenting the destruction of his aspiration to pursue a professional rugby career, as reported by Manchester Evening News.

Embalo was placed on a two-year community order after admitting to causing grievous bodily harm on the eve of the trial. Additionally, he was mandated to engage in rehabilitation activities for 15 days, perform 250 hours of unpaid work, and adhere to a two-month curfew from 9pm to 6am under electronic monitoring.

Adele Wellings, the victim’s mother, recounted witnessing the attack from the sidelines during the game. She recalled the referee halting the match due to escalating tensions between the teams.

She detailed how Embalo proceeded to kick Nathan in the head, leading to her son being found unconscious with facial injuries and experiencing a prolonged seizure lasting six minutes.
