An individual suspected of being an Islamic State extremist and accused of plotting a terrorist attack targeting Jews in Manchester reportedly told an undercover operative, posing as a jihadi, that they were prepared to die in the name of Allah. The suspect, Walid Saadaoui, originally from Tunisia and a former restaurateur, allegedly made these statements just days before a planned smuggling operation of guns and ammunition through Dover for the attack.
Saadaoui, currently on trial at Preston Crown Court, has denied the terrorism charges, as has his co-defendant Amar Hussein. Additionally, Saadaoui’s brother, Bilel Saadaoui, has pleaded not guilty to charges of failing to disclose terrorist activities.
During the trial, the court heard testimony from an undercover operative known only as Farouk. Farouk informed the jury that a corrupt French border official, allegedly recruited to facilitate the smuggling, would ensure that the vehicle containing the weapons would not be subjected to scanning.
In conversations recorded on May 2, 2024, Saadaoui threatened Farouk, stating that he would take action if the official did not uphold his end of the deal. Unbeknownst to Saadaoui, Farouk was gathering evidence as an undercover agent.
Saadaoui expressed his willingness to sacrifice himself in the pursuit of their mission, stating, “We are suicidal with Allah’s permission… We have pledged to die.” Farouk responded with supportive religious sentiments, to which Saadaoui reiterated their commitment to the cause, emphasizing that their dedication was serious and not to be taken lightly.
The defendants, Saadaoui and Hussein, have pleaded not guilty to charges of preparing terrorist acts between December 13, 2023, and May 9, 2024. The prosecution alleges that they procured firearms, conducted reconnaissance, and made plans for the attack. Saadaoui’s defense argues that he was coerced by others and had intended to thwart the plot by informing the authorities.
Bilel Saadaoui, Walid’s brother from Wigan, has also denied a charge of failing to disclose terrorist activities during the same period. The trial continues with further developments expected.
