“The Rise and Fall of Asma al-Assad: Unveiling Syria’s Ex-First Lady”

Date:

The escape of Bashar al-Assad from Syria in December 2024 marked the abrupt conclusion of a ruling family legacy that had endured for over five decades. Following the fall of his administration, a fresh wave of investigations delved into the lives of the Assads, particularly focusing on Bashar’s spouse, Asma al-Assad.

Formerly known as Emma Akhras, Asma, a British-born investment banker hailing from West London, transitioned into the role of Syria’s first lady. Initially portrayed by Vogue as a symbol of modernization and likened to “a rose in the desert,” she later evolved into one of the most contentious figures within Assad’s oppressive regime.

Chloe Hadjimatheou, The Observer’s narrative editor and host of the podcast ‘We Call Her Emma,’ engages in a conversation with guest host Jason Markusoff, exploring the metamorphosis of Syria’s ex-first lady and her involvement in her husband’s governance.
