A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s final performance in Kingston, Ontario, but guitarist Paul Langlois admits he is still coming to terms with it. Reflecting on the milestone during an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner on “The National,” Langlois expressed disbelief that ten years have flown by since their farewell show.
The emotional evening saw lead singer Gord Downie bidding farewell to a packed audience at Kingston’s Rogers K-Rock Centre, now known as Slush Puppi Place, as well as to millions of viewers nationwide. Tears were shed as Downie performed iconic hits like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” for the last time.
Having released 13 studio albums since their inception in 1984, the Canadian band embarked on their final tour in 2016, culminating in a hometown show on August 20. Downie’s battle with terminal brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2015, tragically led to his passing just over a year later at the age of 53.
To mark the 10th anniversary, CBC is set to rebroadcast The Tragically Hip’s final concert on Saturday. The band members expressed gratitude for the enduring impact of their music and the outpouring of support from fans.
While Langlois initially felt uneasy before the last performance, a shift in mood occurred when Downie’s optimism shone through during the soundcheck. Langlois vividly recalled Downie’s assurance that the show would be memorable and enjoyable, lifting his spirits in the process.
Focusing on supporting Downie’s final wish to connect with every audience member, guitarist Rob Baker acknowledged the emotional toll of the tour. Suppressing his feelings during the performances, Baker emphasized the importance of being present for Downie and the audience.
Despite initial concerns about Downie’s health affecting the shows, the band witnessed his physical improvement throughout the farewell tour. Looking back, Langlois and Baker admitted they underestimated the profound impact of their last show, only realizing its significance in the days following the event.
Both Langlois and Baker affirmed that The Tragically Hip will not reunite, but they recently released a new album titled “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,” featuring recordings from the 2016 tour. Baker highlighted the healing power of music, recounting a personal moment of catharsis tied to Downie’s insight on music’s ability to help individuals navigate grief without even realizing it.
