Top-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming U.S. Open due to a lingering right knee injury. Sinner, who recently clinched his second consecutive Wimbledon title by defeating Alexander Zverev, opted out of the Montreal and Cincinnati tournaments to focus on recovery but will not be fit in time for the U.S. Open main draw starting on August 30.
Expressing disappointment, the 25-year-old Italian shared his decision through a post on X, stating, “Despite extensive efforts with my team and medical personnel, I regret to confirm that I will not be participating in this year’s US Open.” Sinner elaborated that further rehabilitation time is essential for his right knee problem following recent training sessions in Monte Carlo.
Reflecting on his fondness for New York and the tournament’s significance to him, Sinner expressed his eagerness to return and compete in front of the enthusiastic fans. In 2024, Sinner claimed the U.S. Open crown but was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in the previous year’s final.
Meanwhile, Alcaraz, who had been sidelined since April due to a right wrist injury, confirmed his readiness to compete in the upcoming U.S. Open. The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has been a focal point in men’s tennis, with the duo facing off in the last three Grand Slam finals in 2025, where Alcaraz emerged victorious in New York.
Sinner, with an impressive record of 44-3 and six titles this year, suffered a setback at the French Open after relinquishing a two-set lead in a challenging match against Juan Manuel Cerundolo. Despite this, Sinner bounced back at Wimbledon, securing his fifth Grand Slam title.
This will mark the first absence of Sinner from a Grand Slam event since his debut at the U.S. Open in 2019.
