Simone Abrahamsohn, residing in Toronto, shared her experience of balancing the role of her big brother’s primary caregiver while fostering a harmonious living environment for two middle-aged, neurodivergent siblings. Despite the challenges, she cherishes the companionship of her brother Stuart, who, as an autistic left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires assistance with daily activities and is sensitive to certain stimuli.
Reflecting on their childhood, Simone recalls feeling ashamed of Stuart’s behaviors, such as introversion and stimming, which were often misunderstood by others. As an adult, she recognizes similarities between them, acknowledging her own struggles with masking ADHD traits. She has adapted her behavior to accommodate Stuart’s needs, ensuring a peaceful cohabitation.
Through their shared living arrangement, Simone aims to support Stuart better than she could in the past, advocating for his preferences and fostering open communication. Despite sacrificing personal pursuits for their relationship, she finds fulfillment in nurturing their bond and creating a supportive environment for both siblings. This second chance at being a supportive sibling motivates her to embrace their unique dynamic and cherish the opportunity to care for her brother.
