The inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham faced a setback at the start. The first day of practice and qualifying for the only IndyCar event in Canada was called off on Friday due to incomplete track construction, preventing officials from conducting final safety checks. Organizers plan to accommodate the missed sessions on Saturday’s schedule.
This marks Markham’s first year hosting the event, which was relocated from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, its home since its inception in 1986. Expressing disappointment, IndyCar president J. Douglas Boles noted challenges faced by the promoter in completing the track build on time despite substantial support.
Attendees Mark Coburn and Scott Stobo, long-time race fans from Kitchener and Waterloo, respectively, expressed mixed feelings about the delays. While prioritizing safety, they acknowledged the impact on fan experience and interest without on-track action throughout the day.
The move from downtown Toronto to Markham last September was a joint decision by IndyCar and the City of Markham. The new temporary circuit, constructed for this event, spans between Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Incomplete features such as a pedestrian bridge and safety fencing adjustments were among the outstanding tasks.
Government investments totaling $5 million were announced in support of the event, with additional capital spending by Markham exceeding $12 million. Spectators enjoyed free access on Friday, with donations encouraged for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Despite the sunny weather, limited shade and seating options posed challenges compared to the previous venue at Exhibition Place.
Off-track activities proceeded as scheduled, including driver autograph sessions. Saturday’s program will be packed, featuring practice sessions and qualifying rounds, leading up to the main event on Sunday. Various racing series are also scheduled to run races on the road course over the weekend.
Reflecting on the event’s challenges, Stobo expressed contentment with the experience but hinted at potential future attendance uncertainties.
