At least three individuals have tragically lost their lives, and multiple others have sustained injuries after being swept into turbulent waters at a popular holiday destination in Tenerife. The incident took place in Puerto de la Cruz, where the injured victims primarily suffered trauma from colliding with rocks or the pier. The group of holidaymakers was swept into the sea around 3 pm on November 8. The first fatality was confirmed by emergency services later that evening.
According to a report from the Canary Islands Emergency Services, one woman who was among those affected went into cardiorespiratory arrest during the rescue efforts. Following the incident, a medical ambulance, a sanitized ambulance, and three basic life support units were dispatched to the scene. Local police, national police, and Maritime Rescue also responded to assist in the rescue operations and maintain control of the area.
The official statement from the emergency services described the event as follows: “A woman lost her life, and nine others were injured after being swept into the water by a strong sea surge at the Puerto de la Cruz Pier in Tenerife at 3 pm.”
In light of the rough sea conditions, the emergency services issued a cautionary advisory urging individuals to avoid positioning themselves at the extremities of piers or breakwaters and to refrain from risking their safety by taking photos or videos near areas where waves crash. Fernando Clavijo, the president of the Canary Islands, reiterated this warning on social media, emphasizing the need to remain vigilant as the region remains on a pre-alert status due to coastal phenomena.
