A tragic incident occurred at Disneyland Resort in California, resulting in the untimely death of a visitor on one of the park’s popular attractions. Dolly Regene Young, 47, lost her life in 1984 when she was ejected from the Matterhorn Bobsled ride and struck by an oncoming cart.
The incident took place in the late afternoon, approximately at 3:30 pm, when Young’s unfastened seatbelt led to her expulsion from the ride. The swift nature of the incident made it difficult for her friends to realize she was missing, as she was seated at the back of the cart.
Investigators are still uncertain whether the seatbelt was intentionally undone or if there was a mechanical malfunction. Such fatal accidents are extremely rare in the park’s long history, with this being the first of its kind in decades.
The ride was promptly stopped within 30 seconds of the tragedy to avoid further harm and provide immediate aid to Young. Disneyland’s spokesperson, Bob Roth, confirmed that Young’s friends only noticed her absence after the ride ended. Fortunately, no one in the other cart that collided with Young was harmed.
The Matterhorn ride was immediately closed following the incident but reopened the next day. The attraction accommodated eight riders, all securely strapped in as they journeyed through a track circling a snow-covered mountain.
The cart that struck Young was traveling at an estimated 20 mph, resulting in her immediate demise. Unfortunately, this was not the first fatality on this particular ride, as a similar incident occurred in 1964, claiming the life of a 15-year-old boy.
The circumstances surrounding the boy’s death remain unclear, as he vanished during the ride. Witnesses reported that he possibly unfastened his seatbelt, leading to a fatal fall beside the tracks.
