Rescue operations were launched following the collapse of a coal mine in Spain, resulting in the loss of two lives. The incident occurred at the Vega de Rengos mine in Cangas del Narcea village, where a coal fall left one miner trapped. The Emergency Coordination Centre was notified of the situation at 4:58 pm local time.
Emergency responders quickly mobilized to address a ground collapse on the mine’s second level, located approximately a mile from the entrance. Three miners were unaccounted for, and two bodies were recovered later. Mining has been a pivotal industry in Asturias for generations, prompting the President of the Principality, Adrián Barbón, to express sorrow and concern via social media.
Real Oviedo, a La Liga team from the region, paid homage to the deceased workers, acknowledging the profound impact of such tragedies on the community. The recent memory of five individuals perishing in a mine explosion in Degaña, Asturias, remains vivid, with victims aged between 32 and 54. The workers were legal permit holders for mineral extraction activities, primarily for graphite production, and the explosion earlier in the year also left four others injured.
