“Tragic Death: Father Leaves Toddler in Hot Car, Found Deceased Ahead of Surrender”

Date:

A 2-year-old girl tragically passed away after being left in a sweltering car, where her body temperature rose above 40C by the time emergency responders arrived. The father, Christopher Scholtes, aged 38, had left his daughter, Parker, in the car for several hours upon returning home, claiming he left her to rest with the car’s air conditioning on. Scholtes’ wife, an anesthesiologist, was working at the time of the incident. It wasn’t until she returned home around 4 pm and inquired about their daughter’s whereabouts that Scholtes rushed outside to check the car, parked in direct sunlight on a scorching day in Marana, near Tucson, Arizona.

Temperatures in the area soared to 43C on that fateful July 9th last year, prompting a police response. On the day Scholtes was expected to surrender after accepting a plea deal, he was discovered deceased. Investigators revealed that Scholtes acknowledged knowing he had left his daughter in the car, admitting he usually parked in the garage but refrained that day due to obstructing exercise equipment. Scholtes’ two other children, aged 9 and 5, disclosed to authorities that their father frequently left them alone in the car.

According to the siblings, Scholtes became preoccupied with video games and household chores while his youngest daughter remained in the vehicle. Law enforcement seized a PlayStation and other electronic devices as part of the inquiry. Prosecutors alleged that Scholtes consumed alcohol, played video games, and watched inappropriate content while his daughter suffered in the hot car. Despite initially claiming the child was in the car for only 30 minutes, surveillance footage contradicted Scholtes’ account, showing his return at 1 pm and his wife’s inquiry about Parker’s whereabouts at 4 pm.

Upon discovering their motionless daughter still strapped in her car seat, the couple rushed her to the hospital, but unfortunately, Parker did not survive. An autopsy confirmed the young girl’s body temperature to be 108.9F (42.72C) when found unresponsive by emergency personnel, attributing her death to environmental heat exposure ruled as accidental.

Scholtes informed authorities that he left his daughter in the car with the air conditioning running for half an hour as she had fallen asleep during their return from shopping. He later confessed that the car’s engine shuts off automatically after 30 minutes. Bodycam footage captured Scholtes expressing distress over the situation, acknowledging the tragic nature of the event. Text exchanges between Scholtes and his wife indicated a history of leaving their children in the car, with his wife admonishing him for repeated negligence.

Scholtes recently accepted a plea agreement, pleading guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse. Scheduled to surrender for imprisonment, he was discovered deceased in a Phoenix suburb home. The plea deal stipulated a maximum 30-year prison term for both charges, with sentencing planned for November 21.
