A 64-year-old woman named Jodi Proger tragically lost her life to a deer she had rescued and tried to domesticate when the animal attacked her. The incident occurred on November 15, as Jodi found herself trapped inside an enclosure with the deer. Jodi’s involvement with rescuing deer began in 2013 after witnessing a doe’s death in a car accident.
Jodi’s compassionate act extended to saving a days-old fawn that was found near its deceased mother on the roadside. Despite facing opposition from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Jodi successfully kept the fawn, named Wheezer, whom she treated like a pet.
In interviews, Jodi likened Wheezer to a dog and frequently shared their adventures on her Facebook page, showcasing them dressed in matching outfits for various occasions. Prior to the incident, Jodi had also taken in four other deer, highlighting her dedication to animal rescue efforts.
Following Jodi’s tragic death, her daughter clarified that Wheezer was not responsible for the fatal attack, as he had been neutered as required by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The family emphasized Jodi’s commitment to animal welfare and requested privacy to mourn their loss.
Recognizing Jodi’s licensed status for animal care, authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. While deer-related fatalities in the US primarily result from vehicle collisions, the incident underscores the risks associated with owning wild animals.
