Two toddlers, aged one and two, tragically drowned in a First Nation community in the Island Lake region of eastern Manitoba, according to the RCMP. The incident was reported on Wednesday when the children were brought to the nursing station of Garden Hill Anisininew Nation around 2 p.m. that day, as stated in a news release by the RCMP on Thursday.
Family members discovered the toddlers in a nearby lake and promptly sought help from First Nation safety officers, who then transported the boys to the nursing station. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save them, both toddlers were pronounced dead at the nursing station.
Police investigations suggest that the toddlers wandered away from their residence and ended up in the lake, ruling out any suspicion of foul play. The news release highlighted the profound impact of the tragedy on the families of the toddlers and the wider community, expressing deep sorrow, according to Island Lake RCMP Sgt. Chris Hipolito.
The Garden Hill Anisininew Nation, located approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg, is now grappling with the heartbreaking loss of these young lives.
