A family is grieving the loss of their two-year-old son who tragically passed away after being stung by a box jellyfish while vacationing at a popular resort. The young boy, Vladimir ‘Vova’ Yakubanets, was stung by the jellyfish, known for its potent venom, while playing in shallow water at Chenang Beach in Langkawi, Malaysia.
Despite immediate efforts to help him, Vova’s condition worsened, and he was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to the effects of the jellyfish sting four days later. His parents, Nikita and Olga Yakubanets, who had traveled from Russia for a dream holiday, recounted the heartbreaking incident.
Nikita shared the harrowing moment when his son cried out in pain while in the water and stopped breathing shortly after. Despite attempts at resuscitation by onlookers and medical responders, the lack of antivenom at the scene meant Vova had to be transported to a hospital 90 miles away for treatment.
The family’s ordeal was further complicated as the hospital in Langkawi had to source antivenom from Penang to counter the venom’s effects. Despite the medical team’s efforts, Vova’s condition deteriorated, and he was transferred to a larger hospital where he tragically passed away due to complications from the jellyfish sting.
In a heart-wrenching statement, Nikita and Olga expressed their sorrow over the loss of their son but emphasized that they would not pursue legal action. They hoped that Vova’s untimely death would serve as a cautionary tale about the dangers posed by marine creatures and raise awareness among other holidaymakers.
The devastated parents described Vova as a kind and intelligent child, fondly remembering him as their little hero and angel. They shared their plans to cremate his remains and bring his ashes back to Russia as a way to honor his memory and keep him close to their hearts.
