Larry and Deborah Dutton, caring grandparents who became adoptive parents to their granddaughter Heidi in Dewey, Oklahoma, provided a nurturing environment for her upbringing. Larry, a retired US Air Force master staff sergeant and former airport manager, and Deborah, also retired from the Air Force and a former chef, had been married for 40 years. Despite their active church engagement and reputation for kindness, a tragic incident unfolded involving their granddaughter and her boyfriend, Lucas Walker.
In January 2023, concerns arose when Deborah and Larry had not been seen for weeks. Neighbors and family members alerted the authorities, leading to a police welfare check on their residence. Upon arrival, officers detected suspicious odors and obtained a search warrant to investigate further.
