“Trainee Police Officer Survives Stroke: Advocates for Awareness”

Date:

A 20-year-old trainee police officer experienced a headache while watching “24 Hours in Police Custody” and suffered a stroke shortly after. Esther Littlewood, who had been preparing for the detective constable program to fulfill her lifelong aspiration of joining the police force, diligently trained for months and successfully passed the rigorous fitness tests in April. Delighted to have been accepted into the course with a start date in August, Esther considered herself exceptionally fit and healthy.

However, on June 29, while watching “24 Hours in Police Custody” with her mother, Esther suddenly complained of a headache. She took some paracetamol and decided to rest upstairs, but later her partner found her unresponsive in bed. Unbeknownst to her family, Esther had already experienced two seizures while unconscious before a third seizure prompted her mother to call emergency services.

Rushed to Chesterfield Royal Hospital in Derbyshire, Esther was placed in a five-day coma, during which it was revealed that she had suffered a stroke due to a patent foramen ovale (PFO), an unclosed heart opening present since birth that allowed a blood clot to travel to her brain. Fortunately, Esther made a complete recovery and now advocates for awareness of the condition that nearly took her life.

Expressing her passion for joining the police force and her disappointment at the unexpected turn of events, Esther emphasized the importance of recognizing symptoms like severe headaches and seeking medical attention promptly. Reflecting on her harrowing experience, she highlighted the rarity of experiencing a stroke at her age and the significance of undergoing surgery to prevent future occurrences.

Now aiming to commence her police training in March, Esther is determined to raise awareness about PFOs and strokes in young individuals. Stressing the preciousness of life and the need to prioritize health, she encourages others to pay attention to warning signs like unusual headaches and take action promptly to safeguard their well-being.
