“Trieste: Italy’s Hidden Gem Sees Tourism Surge”

Date:

Kat Smith, a well-traveled individual with extensive experience exploring various parts of Italy, has decided to call a lesser-known destination her home. Over the past 13 years, Kat has roamed the globe, settling temporarily in different locations. However, the city that has captured her heart and where she has resided for the past two and a half years is Trieste, a city that often escapes the spotlight but is gradually gaining popularity among visitors.

Trieste experienced a notable surge in overnight stays, more than doubling from approximately 700,000 in 2021 to 1.5 million in 2024, reflecting a growing influx of tourists to the area. This growth contrasts with the 29 million overnight stays recorded in Rome last year.

Despite extensively traveling across Italy, Kat has made a point to explore new corners of the country regularly since her relocation in August 2023. While she finds herself drawn back to cities like Naples, Rome, and Venice, she always carves out time to discover fresh locales. From the southern tip of Puglia to the northern borders with Austria, including stops throughout the country and even Sardinia, Kat’s journeys have been diverse and enriching.

Trieste holds a special place in Kat’s heart, being one of her preferred cities. Although relatively undiscovered outside Italy, Trieste is gradually emerging from obscurity to receive the recognition it deserves.

The allure of Trieste lies in its unique characteristics, from its architecture and cuisine to the local dialect. Strolling through the city streets, particularly around Piazza Unità and Via Carducci, one might feel a closer connection to Vienna than Rome. Bakeries showcase Sacher cakes alongside traditional croissants, and menus often feature goulash paired with pasta. Given its proximity to the border, bilingual road signs in Italian and Slovenian are common, especially in the hillside areas surrounding the city center.

Engaging with locals, particularly the older generation, reveals a strong sense of Triestino identity, prioritizing local heritage over national affiliation. This sentiment stems from the city’s history as the Free State of Trieste shortly after World War II, showcasing a distinct cultural pride. The intricate family history of Kat’s elderly neighbor exemplifies the city’s complex past, highlighting the diverse influences that have shaped Trieste’s identity over the years.

Situated along the coastline, Trieste’s affinity for the sea resonates with Kat, who appreciates the city’s strong connection to water. Residents flock to the coast year-round, drawn by the daily ritual of witnessing the sunset over the Adriatic. Boating activities, seaside walks, and a vibrant waterfront culture contribute to the city’s charm. Public transportation extends to the sea, with ferries offering a scenic mode of travel along the coastline and across the bay during the summer months.

Positioned near the Slovenian border, Trieste stands distinct from the rest of Italy, reflecting more Austrian influences in its architecture due to its historical ties to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today, the city thrives as a coastal hub with a rich cultural tapestry, providing ample opportunities to savor sunsets over the Adriatic while enjoying local aperitivos. Seasonal highlights include exploring the coast via public ferry, indulging in Osmiza farm-to-table experiences, and partaking in winter festivities at Piazza Unità adorned with festive decorations.
