Residents of Tumbler Ridge witnessed the beginning of a new phase as the walls of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School were demolished this week. Chris Norbury, a long-time resident deeply affected by a tragic mass shooting at the school in February, joined the community in observing the demolition process. Norbury emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs and feelings of those directly impacted by the event, signaling the start of a new chapter for Tumbler Ridge and its students.
The school, originally built in the 1980s during Tumbler Ridge’s coal mining era, held a significant place in the community’s history, hosting generations of students who created lasting memories. Following the tragic events of February 10, students and staff expressed a collective desire not to return to the building, leading to the decision to demolish it.
As the school is torn down, plans are underway for a new campus, with students temporarily attending classes at a makeshift location. The construction of additional facilities, including a child-care center and a mobile trades training center, aims to provide a safe and conducive environment for students and staff. Distance learning options are also available for those not yet ready to return to a physical campus.
Looking ahead, the site of the former school will be transformed into a grass field, with discussions ongoing regarding potential permanent memorials. Mayor Darryl Krakowka highlighted the community’s involvement in decision-making processes, ensuring that the wishes of the victims’ families are respected. The municipality is actively engaged in developing a comprehensive recovery plan, supported by provincial and federal resources.
While plans for the new school are still being finalized, there is a consensus among residents to maintain central facilities and specialty programs. The community anticipates the positive impact of a new school as it moves forward from the tragic events of the past.
