The UFC Freedom 250 event, which took place on the White House grounds in June, was hailed as a major success by TKO officials. However, the financial outcome paints a different picture.
TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of UFC, disclosed that they invested approximately $60 million US in production expenses for the event on June 14, which was highly anticipated within the organization. Despite the hype, during the company’s recent earnings call, CFO Andrew Schleimer revealed that the company faced a loss of around $30 million due to the grand scale of the spectacle. The event was organized to commemorate the United States’ 250th anniversary and President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.
Schleimer informed investors during the Q2 earnings call that they incurred higher-than-usual costs, partly offset by the sale of global partnership inventory. Since tickets were not sold, no revenue from live events was recorded. The financial impact resulted in an expected loss of approximately $30 million, significantly affecting UFC’s margins both independently and on a consolidated basis.
The MMA event garnered over 34 million viewers worldwide and featured a seven-fight card where each match ended in a knockout or technical knockout, a first in UFC history. Fourteen top fighters battled in the cage set up on the White House’s South Lawn in front of an audience of about 4,300 attendees, including members of Congress, business leaders, military personnel, and Trump administration officials. The White House promoted it as a unique celebration of the American fighting spirit.
Despite the financial setback, TKO’s CEO, Ari Emanuel, praised the event’s success during the earnings call, emphasizing the company’s exceptional ability to deliver live events and experiences. Other executives also lauded the event for generating over $1 billion in earned media value and enhancing commercial partnerships.
However, fans hoping for a repeat event at the White House may be disappointed. UFC’s president and CEO, Dana White, expressed that although the previous event was memorable, the company does not plan to host a similar one due to the substantial costs involved.
