A couple from the UK had to exit their airplane and forego their vacation after staff allegedly disregarded their nut allergies, despite being informed. Pretoria Drever and Rhonan Kelly claim that KLM flight attendants persisted in serving almond-topped cakes despite their airborne allergy concerns. Despite voicing their worries multiple times, the couple felt compelled to disembark, causing them to miss their planned holiday to Amsterdam for Rhonan’s birthday.
KLM responded by stating they cannot prevent passengers from consuming nut-containing products during flights but confirmed that their crew makes announcements to discourage such behavior. The couple’s discomfort escalated at Edinburgh Airport on October 25, prompting them to leave the aircraft.
Rhonan, who recently got engaged to Pretoria, expressed feeling discriminated against and feared a severe allergic reaction if exposed to nuts during the flight. The couple had proactively disclosed their allergies to KLM, yet the situation onboard left them feeling unsupported and vulnerable.
Despite being informed that EpiPens were available onboard, Pretoria and Rhonan deemed this insufficient for their safety. Disappointed by missing their trip, the couple, hailing from Bellshill, Lanarkshire, seeks a refund from KLM, emphasizing the impact the incident had on their confidence in flying.
Pretoria, working in car insurance, shared her anxiety about flying and the distressing experience of being singled out due to their allergies. The couple felt marginalized and unsafe, leading them to vow against flying with KLM again.
In response, a KLM spokesperson expressed regret over the couple’s ordeal and highlighted the airline’s efforts to accommodate passengers with allergies. However, they emphasized the limitations in enforcing a nut-free environment onboard and directed to their website for more information on dietary options.
The incident underscores the challenges faced by individuals with severe allergies while traveling, highlighting the need for airlines to prioritize passenger safety and well-being.
