“UK Households Shift to Internet TV, Freeview Faces Retirement”

Date:

Many households in the UK are already utilizing the internet for live and on-demand content consumption. A recent study, conducted on behalf of Sky, indicates a potential shift for more Britons to adopt this trend. The report suggests that by the mid-2030s, nearly all households could have access to internet-based TV services, leading to the retirement of traditional terrestrial distribution methods like Freeview.

Various alternatives to traditional aerial-based TV viewing have emerged, including the latest streaming options from Sky and the Freely service, which is affiliated with Freeview’s parent company. Freely is now integrated into numerous new televisions, providing viewers with access to both live and on-demand programming through a broadband connection.

The rising prevalence of internet-connected devices in homes has contributed to a decline in traditional broadcast TV viewership, with an increasing number of households opting for streaming services.

Another challenge faced by Freeview is the potential impact of mobile phones. Post-2031, there may be a necessity for the standard TV network to share its radio frequencies with mobile operators in the UK, potentially rendering the current over-the-air transmission system less sustainable.

The expenses associated with maintaining the aging TV distribution system are escalating, prompting ongoing discussions within the UK government regarding future actions.

Nick Herm, Group Chief Operating Officer at Sky, commented on the recent findings, stating, “This research underscores the compatibility of modern TV and social inclusivity. A complete transition to internet-based TV by the 2030s is feasible and could aid in bridging the digital gap rather than widening it.

“Given the widespread adoption of streaming services, government investment in skills and affordable connectivity for the relatively small number of households still reliant on traditional TV can yield benefits beyond television, while also saving substantial costs on maintaining outdated systems.”

While some individuals may welcome the shift towards streaming, not everyone shares the enthusiasm. A current petition opposing the discontinuation of Freeview has garnered over 100,000 signatures, with many expressing concerns about potential difficulties in TV viewing without it. Unlike the simple requirement of an aerial for Freeview, streaming necessitates a reliable and costly internet connection.

The petition highlights the perceived threat to traditional terrestrial TV via Freeview, emphasizing the imminent decision by the government on whether to phase out terrestrial signals in favor of internet-based TV (IPTV) entirely, potentially obliging every household to subscribe to a costly fixed broadband service to continue accessing their favorite TV programs.

Lynette, an 80-year-old resident of Kent, is among those dismayed by the proposed changes.

“Free Terrestrial TV is indispensable for me – be it for entertainment, news, or educational content from magazine programs,” shared Lynette.

“I prefer not to navigate through apps or create new accounts, nor do I want a complex TV interface attempting to predict my viewing preferences. I have tried watching online programs with family members, only to encounter interruptions and error messages. Similarly, my experience with a streaming service was unsatisfactory.”

Further updates on the future landscape of TV broadcasting are anticipated to be disclosed shortly.
