A significant change is set to revolutionize how UK households stay connected with loved ones. Starting in January next year, consumers nationwide will transition from traditional copper-wire phone lines, known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology.
VoIP, a more modern system, utilizes an internet connection for making phone calls instead of the traditional analogue wiring. Despite initial apprehensions, there are substantial benefits to embracing this new technology, including improved call quality, enhanced reliability, and additional features like spam call protection and call forwarding capabilities.
While plans for this transition have been in place for some time, many individuals seem unaware of the impending change. Recent findings from telecom specialists at Phonely reveal that 58.7% of UK adults over 50 are oblivious to the upcoming phasing out of traditional landlines, despite repeated industry alerts and the extended deadline until January 31, 2027.
Phonely cautions that this lack of awareness could lead to a surge in last-minute upgrades in 2026, potentially causing issues such as equipment shortages, backlog of engineers, installation delays in rural regions, and increased strain on telecommunication providers.
As the deadline approaches, it is essential for older households, who prioritize stability and dependability, to acknowledge the impending shift. Experts advise against delaying the transition, highlighting that the extension to 2027 may create a false sense of security.
Director Bryn Thompson from Phonely emphasized the urgency, stating, “The fact that nearly six in ten over-50s are unaware of this transition should raise concerns for all stakeholders. Procrastination could result in chaos at the last minute.”
Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich, added that these changes raise questions for residents, especially those not online who rely on landlines for social connections and safety. It is advised to consult with telephone providers to understand the switchover options and communicate any specific needs, such as telecare alarms.
The transition involves retiring the UK’s copper-based PSTN network in favor of digital VoIP services. Following January 31, 2027, traditional analogue landlines will cease to function, requiring calls to be made through broadband connections.
While many younger households have shifted to mobile phones, a significant portion of individuals over 50, particularly in rural areas, still rely on landlines for daily communication, emergencies, and telecare alarm systems.
Telecommunication providers are expected to reach out to customers directly to explain the migration process. The change is not anticipated to incur additional costs, with households primarily needing a broadband connection and a phone compatible with the new system.
However, concerns arise regarding internet dependency, especially among older consumers without online access. Solutions for this group are being explored ahead of the 2027 deadline, and individuals worried about the transition are encouraged to engage with their phone providers to explore available alternatives.
