UK Tourist Recounts Hurricane Hotel Ordeal

Date:

A UK tourist who recently visited Jamaica and paid £300 per night shared her harrowing experience of having to fortify her hotel room with mattresses as Hurricane Melissa struck the Caribbean island.

Pooja, a mortgage advisor from Derby, Derbyshire, flew to Jamaica to meet her Canadian mother-in-law and 19 other relatives for a sunny family vacation at the Grand Palladium hotel near Montego Bay. Planning to enjoy a 10-day tropical getaway from October 21st to the 31st, they found themselves in a dire situation when Hurricane Melissa approached.

Initially aiming to book flights out of Jamaica ahead of the storm, Pooja and her family faced challenges as flights were canceled, leaving them stranded. As the hurricane intensified to a Category 5, they had no option but to hunker down in their hotel room, following safety protocols advised by the hotel staff.

With the hotel atmosphere tense and preparations in place, Pooja described the frightening experience as the hurricane made landfall, causing loud noises and visible damage around the hotel. After the storm passed, Pooja observed the widespread destruction in the area, with houses damaged, roads filled with potholes, and fallen trees creating obstacles.

Despite being stuck in Jamaica post-hurricane with limited resources and high costs, Pooja remained grateful for their safety and essential supplies. She highlighted the challenges of being stranded without power or stable internet access, adding to the difficulty of finding a way back home.

Following her evacuation from the island, Pooja reflected on the ongoing struggles faced by many Jamaicans without basic amenities. To aid in the recovery efforts, the Jamaican government set up a disaster relief website where donations can be made to support the affected communities.

As the situation gradually improves, assistance and support remain crucial for Jamaica’s recovery from the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.
