“UK’s DragonFire Laser Shatters Drone Speed Records”

Date:

Britain has successfully tested its advanced DragonFire laser by shooting down high-speed drones, showcasing a significant advancement in national defense capabilities. The laser system, trialed at the MOD’s Hebrides range, effectively intercepted drones traveling at speeds of up to 650km/h, surpassing the velocity of a Formula 1 car. This cutting-edge technology, reminiscent of Star Wars weaponry, boasts a low cost of £10 per shot and remarkable precision, capable of hitting a £1 coin from a kilometer away.

Following the successful trials, a £316 million contract has been granted to MBDA to supply new systems to the Royal Navy by 2027, accelerating the deployment timeline by five years on a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer. The DragonFire laser, a key component of the Strategic Defence Review (SDR), marks a significant milestone as the first high-power laser system developed by a European nation, positioning it as one of the most advanced directed energy weapons programs within NATO.

The implementation of DragonFire is projected to create and sustain 590 jobs throughout the UK, underscoring defense as a catalyst for economic growth. Notably, this initiative will generate 200 skilled positions in Scotland, 185 roles in the South West of England, and 75 opportunities in the East of England, aligning with the Government’s Plan for Change.

Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard MP, emphasized the transformative impact of the high-power laser on enhancing the UK’s defense capabilities within NATO, ensuring the nation’s preparedness against evolving threats. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting British industry and fostering job creation in the defense sector, reinforcing defense as a driver of economic prosperity nationwide.

Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander highlighted the critical role of Scottish expertise in the UK’s national security, particularly evident through the successful drone interception by DragonFire. He emphasized Scotland’s reputation as a hub of defense excellence and praised the UK Government’s efforts to bolster the defense sector, emphasizing the importance of investing in both service personnel and Scottish industry to strengthen national security, create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth.
