“University Student Killed by Wolves During Geological Survey”

Date:

A young student tragically lost his life after being attacked by a group of wolves while taking a walk, despite being warned by a colleague. Kenton Carnegie, 22, was participating in a geological survey project in Points North Landing, Canada, as part of his university studies when the incident occurred.

On November 8, 2005, Carnegie decided to explore the area near the lake to observe the rocks. Despite a caution from pilot Todd Svarckopf advising him to stay at the camp and join a hockey game at the airport hangar, Carnegie ventured out alone. Approximately a kilometer away from the camp, he encountered a lone wolf tracking him through the snowy terrain.

Upon noticing the wolf, Carnegie increased his pace, but soon two more wolves joined the pursuit, leading to a fatal attack by the pack. Despite his attempts to defend himself, Carnegie was overpowered by the animals. Later that day, a search team from the camp discovered Carnegie’s tracks leading to the lake, where they found his body surrounded by wolf footprints.

Rosalie Tsannie, the local coroner, was called to the scene to assist in handling Carnegie’s body. She described the chilling experience of hearing the wolves howling nearby as they worked to recover the victim. Prior to the attack, Carnegie had contacted his mother to report wolf sightings in the area.

Following Carnegie’s death, wildlife officers from the Environment Department shot two wolves three days later. Subsequent examinations revealed human remains in the wolves’ digestive systems, potentially linked to the tragic incident. One of the wolves was described as muscular, weighing approximately 46kg.

Carnegie’s father fondly remembered his son as a dynamic and sensitive individual who had a deep appreciation for nature. He clarified that Carnegie was not intentionally seeking out the wolves but simply enjoying a walk to observe the geological formations in the bay.
