“US Company Unveils Luxury Residential Cruise Ship Living”

Date:

A US company has revealed plans for a unique residential cruise ship that offers a permanent living option at sea, catering to those who wish to continue sailing beyond typical cruise durations. Villa Vie Residences currently operates the Odyssey, a residential cruise ship that embarked on a global journey in October 2024, with a 15-year itinerary.

The Odyssey’s ongoing cruise involves multiple circumnavigations of the globe, each lasting approximately three and a half years. The company has announced “Project Lumina,” which aims to acquire a luxury cruise ship for residents to live on either full-time or part-time. They suggest that these all-inclusive cruise options may be more cost-effective than traditional land-based living arrangements.

Prospective residents looking to call the ship home permanently can secure an oceanview room starting at $539,999 or upgrade to a balcony suite for $899,999. There will be additional monthly fees for residents. Alternatively, more affordable options such as five-year ownerships and rentals are available for those not committed to long-term sea living.

Compared to the typical cost of a flat in London ranging from £530,000 to £610,000, the residential cruise ship offers a potentially more affordable housing alternative. Residents are not obligated to live on the ship permanently and can explore options like renting out their rooms or inviting guests onboard for a fee.

While specific details about the ship remain confidential, the company assures that the cruise will provide an “ultra-luxury” experience and will operate alongside the existing Odyssey service. The amenities on the current residential cruise include gourmet dining, entertainment, a swimming pool, optional excursions, and regular housekeeping. Residents also benefit from services like laundry, medical visits, a social club, and various events to foster a sense of community during the extended voyage.

The company targets a diverse demographic for the cruise, including retirees, remote workers, and digital nomads who can take advantage of onboard facilities like a business center and high-speed WiFi for remote work. Newly-appointed President Chris Cox highlighted the demand for residential oceangoing lifestyles and emphasized the company’s commitment to offering high-value, personalized experiences through Project Lumina.
