“US White Supremacist Convicted in Brutal Murder Case”

Date:

An individual from the United States associated with white supremacist groups has been convicted of a brutal murder initially mistaken for a bear attack.

Daren Christopher Abbey was found guilty of the savage killing of Dustin Kjersem using an axe, a block of wood, and a screwdriver in October 2024. The crime occurred at Dustin’s campsite near Big Sky, Montana, where his body was discovered by his girlfriend and a friend.

Initially thought to be a bear attack, wildlife agents ruled out that possibility after finding no animal presence in the area. Abbey’s connection to the crime was established through the discovery of his DNA on a beer can inside Dustin’s tent.

Abbey claimed he had arrived at the campsite for an overnight stay and was welcomed by Dustin, whom he had not previously met, according to Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer. Initially alleging self-defense, Abbey’s story was refuted by prosecutors due to inconsistencies and the numerous chop wounds inflicted on Dustin during the assault.

Subsequently, Abbey confessed to stealing Kjersem’s belongings and tampering with evidence post the murder. Following a six-day trial, Abbey was convicted of intentional homicide and evidence tampering, declining to testify in his defense.

Although punishable by death in Montana, prosecutors have opted not to seek the death penalty for Abbey in this case, as confirmed by Jack Veil from the Gallatin County Attorney’s Office.

Abbey’s defense counsel, Sarah Kottke, mentioned that Abbey will decide on appealing the conviction after his sentencing on December 30, citing the challenges faced in presenting an affirmative defense in a secluded environment without witnesses.

Prior records from Gallatin County indicated Abbey’s association with a white supremacist faction, along with tattoos of a swastika and iron cross. Dustin, survived by two children, worked as a self-employed contractor, specializing in home construction and various other trades, as stated by his sister.
