Former military veterans facing challenges in finding employment are undergoing retraining in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity through a specialized program initiated by fellow veterans. The initiative has proven successful in helping veterans transition into civilian jobs, with recruitment firm FDM playing a key role in offering career opportunities to ex-military personnel.
One such success story is John Blackburn, a former British Army military intelligence officer, who landed a managerial position in AI after completing the training program. Blackburn, who served in Iraq, shared his experience of initially struggling with the transition from military life but credited FDM for equipping him with relevant skills and boosting his confidence for his new career path.
Another beneficiary, RAF Air Cartographer David Vine, highlighted the training program’s significance in providing insights into the corporate work environment and enhancing his confidence for post-service employment. Veterans like Vine bring valuable qualities such as discipline, resilience, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving abilities to the IT sector, making them well-suited for tech roles.
The veteran-led program, fully funded by FDM and spanning two years, aims to support veterans in overcoming the challenges of entering the civilian workforce. FDM’s CEO Rod Flavell emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for veterans to pursue tech careers by leveraging their transferable skills and fostering a supportive learning environment within the company.
FDM’s commitment to supporting ex-forces personnel has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award and the Employer of The Year accolade at the British Ex-Forces Awards. The company’s partnership with charity Walking with the Wounded further demonstrates its dedication to assisting ex-servicemen and women in addressing issues related to mental health, unemployment, and homelessness.
