“Victims’ Commissioner Baroness Helen Newlove Passes Away”

Baroness Helen Newlove, the Victims’ Commissioner, has sadly passed away following a brief illness. Known for her unwavering fight against antisocial behavior after her husband was tragically killed by a group of troublemakers in front of his family, she was celebrated as a dedicated advocate for victims and witnesses’ rights.

David Lammy, the Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary, expressed deep sorrow at the news, praising Baroness Newlove as an exceptional public servant characterized by courage, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to justice. In 2007, her husband Garry fell victim to a fatal attack by drunken youths while trying to protect their family from ongoing acts of harassment and violence.

Baroness Newlove, who had a profound impact on tackling antisocial behavior and alcohol abuse, was appointed as the Government Champion for Active, Safer Communities in 2010. Her efforts to make communities safer and address local issues were widely recognized. In 2021, she assumed the role of Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords, continuing her advocacy for victims’ voices to be heard.

Having previously served as Victims’ Commissioner from 2013 to 2019, Baroness Newlove returned for an additional term in 2023 to ensure victims’ interests were upheld. Her dedication to empowering victims and strengthening their presence in the criminal justice system was acknowledged by Mr. Lammy, who emphasized her pivotal role in shaping the Victims’ Code.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron, who elevated Baroness Newlove to the peerage, mourned her passing, highlighting her transformation of personal tragedy into a lifetime of service to victims of crime. The Victims’ Commissioner’s office also paid tribute to her remarkable legacy, emphasizing her commitment to advocating for victims with compassion, respect, and integrity.
