Virgin Media has announced that some of its broadband customers will soon enjoy an upgrade to their home routers. The company revealed in a recent blog post that users still relying on the older Hub 3 and Hub 4 devices will be able to transition to the more advanced Hub 5 technology at no additional cost.
The Hub 5 boasts improved Wi-Fi 6 technology, delivering faster and more reliable connections compared to the outdated routers. Eligible customers will be notified via email gradually throughout 2026 as the upgrade is rolled out.
Virgin Media highlighted the Hub 5 as their latest router, featuring Wi-Fi 6 technology and seven internal antennas for enhanced coverage within homes. The company emphasized that selected customers using older hubs will be upgraded progressively, benefiting thousands throughout the year.
Qualified customers will receive direct communication from Virgin Media regarding the upgrade, eliminating the need for proactive steps until then. To ascertain eligibility, users can log into their My Virgin Media account online or check their router model by inspecting the device’s sticker or using the Virgin Media Connect app.
Updating to the Hub 5 router is recommended as it promises broader Wi-Fi coverage, increased stability, and support for future advancements. This upgrade is particularly advantageous for achieving faster Gig1 speeds, resulting in expedited downloads and streaming experiences. Gig1 speeds enable users to download a full HD movie in under 40 seconds, significantly surpassing the UK average.
Wi-Fi 6, the latest wireless networking technology, offers accelerated speeds, enhanced efficiency, and superior performance, especially in crowded environments. It accommodates multiple connected devices simultaneously, excelling across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Wi-Fi 6 is energy-efficient, making it ideal for modern smart homes with high data demands. While Wi-Fi 7 technology is available, Wi-Fi 6 remains ideal for the average user’s needs.
