“Wales Outdoors Cuts Ties with Snowdon Heritage Railway”

Date:

A tour operator expressed strong dissatisfaction with a popular heritage railway attraction in the UK, citing issues such as steamy and leaking windows on the carriages. Andy Lamb, the owner of Wales Outdoors, criticized the Snowdon Mountain Railway (SMR) for last-minute cancellations and subpar customer experiences on the heritage train.

Following the negative experience, Andy Lamb shared his grievances online, sparking a mix of responses from commentators. While some mocked his expectations of modern comforts on a heritage train with traditional features like wooden seats and vinyl covers, others showed sympathy towards his concerns.

Wales Outdoors, founded by professional mountain guide Andy over three decades ago, typically recommends trips such as reaching the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) via the mountain’s rack-and-pinion railway. However, due to recent incidents, the company has decided to cease recommending the Snowdon Mountain Railway to its clients.

In response to the complaints, Snowdon Mountain Railway (Rheilffordd yr Wyddfa) acknowledged the need for better customer support during weather-related disruptions. The railway mentioned ongoing IT upgrades aimed at enhancing group bookings, communications, and overall customer engagement to ensure a more satisfactory experience for visitors.

Andy Lamb detailed multiple grievances to the railway following an incident involving his clients, where they were informed of potential service disruptions due to high wind speeds. Despite assurances from railway staff, the guests were later informed that the train might not reach the summit. Despite the challenges, the passengers decided to proceed, only to be informed mid-journey that the train could not complete the ascent.

The heritage train’s exposed route on the craggy slopes often faces weather-related limitations, leading to potential summit restrictions for safety reasons. Passengers are typically informed that trips are subject to weather conditions, which may impact the full journey.

Unlike modern trains with enclosed carriages, heritage trains like the Snowdon Mountain Railway have more exposure to the elements, including open-air carriages and older designs with unique features like floor holes for drainage and seat holes to prevent water accumulation. Some passengers view these characteristics as an integral part of the authentic heritage train experience.

The Snowdon Mountain Railway, spanning 4.7 miles from Llanberis, attracts a significant number of passengers annually seeking heritage travel and scenic views. The railway’s partnership with Vennersys aims to streamline operations, offering online ticketing, allocated seating, and enhanced visitor management to provide a more personalized and efficient service.

Despite efforts to improve services, Wales Outdoors has decided to sever ties with the Snowdon Mountain Railway, emphasizing the need for better communication and professional customer service. The railway management reiterated its commitment to passenger and staff safety while striving to enhance passenger comfort and deliver a safe and enjoyable journey to Wales’ highest point.
