An urgent warning has been issued to users of Android and iPhone devices regarding the risks associated with using unofficial chargers. With the trend of new devices being sold without chargers, consumers often seek cheaper alternatives. However, consumer watchdog Which? has raised concerns about the safety of these unofficial chargers.
Which? conducted a study by purchasing chargers from various online marketplaces like Amazon, AliExpress, and eBay. The results were concerning, with nine chargers found to pose electric shock risks and eight deemed potential fire hazards. One charger even resembled an Apple product but failed safety tests as it was a counterfeit.
The investigation also revealed chargers without necessary safety markings and devices with hazardous internal circuitry, increasing the risk of overheating, fires, or explosions. Which? has previously highlighted the dangers of unsafe electrical products sold online.
Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences of poorly designed electrical products and urged the government to strengthen product safety laws for online marketplaces.
In response to the findings, Amazon assured that customer safety is a top priority and that non-compliant products have been removed. B&Q also emphasized its commitment to product safety.
Consumers are advised to purchase chargers from official retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to avoid potential safety issues associated with cheaper alternatives. While these products may be more expensive, experts warn that the risks outweigh the savings.
