The union representing 4,400 flight attendants at WestJet has announced a 72-hour strike notice, potentially leading to a strike during the peak summer travel season. The Canadian Union of Public Employees stated that significant differences still exist between the two sides on crucial matters.
Alia Hussain, chair of the union’s WestJet division, emphasized the need for necessary changes and expressed efforts to secure a fair agreement. Despite the looming strike possibility, Hussain highlighted ongoing negotiations to avert the situation.
Responding to the strike notice, WestJet issued a 72-hour lockout notice. The airline clarified that they are actively engaged in discussions to reach a resolution. WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech expressed regret over the disruptions and uncertainties faced by passengers due to the ongoing situation.
If an agreement is not reached, potential job action could commence at 12:01 a.m. MT on Sunday. WestJet has been accommodating passengers with flights scheduled between July 30 and August 4 by allowing free changes or cancellations. Regional flights and code-share services are expected to operate normally during any strike period.
A recent agreement between the two parties outlines protocols for grounding planes and ensuring crew members’ safe return in case of a work stoppage. The union’s concerns include uncompensated ground duties, while WestJet maintains that all tasks are remunerated through a credit hour system.
Aviation expert John Gradek warned that even a brief shutdown could result in substantial financial losses for WestJet during the peak travel season. The airline, handling over 600 daily flights and serving thousands of passengers, is striving to minimize disruptions in case of any operational challenges.
