A recent online scam targeting WhatsApp users has surfaced, posing a serious threat to personal data security. Despite the ongoing warnings about various scams and online threats, many individuals are still vulnerable to falling victim to these deceptive practices. One such scam, known as the “ghost pairing scam,” has emerged on WhatsApp, urging users to exercise caution when interacting within the app.
Caroline, a social media user, took to TikTok to highlight the dangers of this scam, emphasizing that succumbing to its tactics could grant hackers remote access to sensitive data. The modus operandi of this scam involves receiving a seemingly legitimate message, either warning about account security risks or pretending to be from a known contact asking for a code to be sent back.
By unknowingly forwarding the received code as instructed, users inadvertently link their WhatsApp accounts to the scammer’s device. This unauthorized access enables hackers to view messages, images, and even send messages posing as the user, potentially perpetuating the scam to others in the contact list without detection.
What makes this scam particularly insidious is that it does not disrupt the user’s normal WhatsApp functionality, making it challenging to discern any compromise. However, there are simple preventive measures to avoid falling prey to such scams. It is crucial never to share any WhatsApp verification codes with anyone, as WhatsApp never requests this information via text messages. If prompted for a code by a contact, advise them to resend it to their own number and refrain from sharing any received codes.
Users can also review their linked devices under the app settings to ensure security. On Android devices, access Linked Devices through the app’s menu, while iPhone users can find this information in the settings. If unfamiliar devices are linked, promptly log out or remove them to sever any unauthorized access.
Caroline’s video garnered appreciation from viewers who were previously unaware of this scam, with many expressing gratitude for the awareness and pledging to share this vital information, especially with older family members who might be more susceptible. Some individuals shared their own encounters with the scam, emphasizing the importance of staying vigilant and taking proactive steps to safeguard personal data.
