“Widow Blames ECB for Cricket Coach’s Suicide”

Date:

Graham Thorpe’s widow has expressed her belief that if he had received more assistance from the England and Wales Cricket Board after leaving his coaching position, he might still be alive today. Thorpe, a highly regarded batsman and former England assistant coach, tragically took his own life in August last year after battling anxiety and depression.

During an inquest at Surrey Coroner’s Court in Woking in July 2025, it was revealed that Thorpe had struggled with depression following his dismissal as a batting coach in 2022, having even attempted suicide previously. The coroner, Jonathan Stevens, highlighted deficiencies in the care provided to Thorpe by healthcare professionals in the months leading up to his death, ultimately ruling it as a suicide. Thorpe had been undergoing mental health therapy for 18 months before parting ways with the ECB.

Stevens acknowledged that the organization had supported Thorpe post-departure by funding treatments, hospital stays, and extending his health insurance coverage. Despite this, Amanda, Thorpe’s widow, believes that more could have been done to help him through the challenging transition period.

In an interview with talkSPORT, Amanda Thorpe expressed her conviction that had her husband not experienced such a sudden end to his cricketing career, he might still be alive today. She emphasized the importance of having a support system in place during times of change, stating that even a small amount of support could have made a significant difference.

Amanda also criticized the remote support provided, deeming it inadequate and insufficient for Thorpe’s needs. She noted that despite seeking help, it was not forthcoming, and Thorpe’s condition continued to deteriorate.

The ECB has been approached for comment on the matter.
