A woman from Prince George speculates that she could be the inspiration behind Dolly Parton’s hit song “Jolene.” Juline Whelan met the iconic singer in 1972 and bears a resemblance to the girl described by Parton as the muse for the song’s title.
Although Whelan doesn’t recall the specific interaction mentioned by Parton, she vividly remembers encountering the singer in 1972 when she was just 10 years old during a family trip to Disneyland. At a country music concert featuring Parton, Whelan approached her for an autograph, having been a fan of Parton’s song “Coat of Many Colors.”
Years later, after watching a 2015 TV movie about Dolly Parton’s life, Whelan began to connect the dots. Upon researching the origins of the song “Jolene,” she stumbled upon an interview where Parton described meeting a red-haired, green-eyed girl named Jolene, sparking Whelan’s realization that she might be the inspiration.
The frequent mix-up between her name, Juline, and “Jolene” further strengthens Whelan’s belief in the connection. Despite the initial annoyance of being associated with the song’s character, Whelan has come to appreciate the iconic tune over the years.
The song “Jolene” was inspired by a real-life incident involving a flirtatious bank teller who caught Parton’s husband’s attention. It has become one of Parton’s most renowned hits, earning a spot on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the greatest songs of all time.
While Whelan hopes to reunite with Parton during her Vancouver performance, she admits she would likely be left speechless in the presence of the music legend.
