Woman’s Dental Nightmare: Scarred in Glasgow Surgery

Date:

A young woman in Glasgow, Razan Ankour, shared how her life took a drastic turn after experiencing a serious infection post a dental procedure. Following the removal of a wisdom tooth, Razan faced excruciating pain that led her to seek urgent medical attention at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Doctors diagnosed her with a severe infection, prompting emergency surgery to drain fluid causing swelling in her jaw and neck.

The surgical intervention resulted in a visible scar on Razan’s neck, likened to a knife wound. Seeking to improve its appearance, she aims to undergo reconstructive and laser treatments. Razan’s ordeal began when she was referred to The Albion Clinic after unbearable jaw pain prevented her from eating or closing her mouth. The clinic advised breaking apart and removing the misaligned wisdom tooth, which subsequently led to severe swelling in her face and neck.

Recounting her distressing experience to Glasgow Live, Razan detailed how her jaw locked up, making it impossible to open her mouth, with her face and neck swelling significantly. Rushed to the hospital by ambulance, she underwent surgery to address the severe infection by draining the accumulated fluid. Following the procedure, Razan endured over four months of difficulty eating normally, with a heavy and stiff tongue due to the potent antibiotics that also caused her to lose her sense of smell temporarily.

Despite the need for follow-up care and promised laser treatments, Razan did not receive the necessary support. She expressed ongoing pain, discomfort, and self-consciousness due to the scar, affecting her mental well-being and self-esteem. Razan’s distress prompted her to seek assistance through a fundraiser for scar treatment.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde confirmed that an investigation into Razan’s care at QEUH concluded that she received appropriate treatment. A spokesperson for the health board extended an apology to Razan for any distress caused and encouraged her to reach out for further support if needed. While Razan has yet to file a formal complaint against the dental practice, she has been advised to do so. The Albion Clinic is yet to provide a response on the matter.
