Zipcar, a car rental company, has revealed its intention to cease operations in the United Kingdom by the end of this year. The UK general manager, James Taylor, informed customers via email that discussions are ongoing, and bookings beyond December 31 have been temporarily halted. Taylor stated that Zipcar is initiating formal consultations with its UK staff to discontinue operations in the UK.
For customers who have already reserved a car for Christmas, the service will proceed as scheduled. However, individuals with New Year vehicle bookings will be contacted by the company. Refunds will be provided to members with reservations after December 31, and cancellation fees will be waived.
Despite the proposal to close UK operations, Zipcar accounts will remain active until a final decision is reached following the consultation process. The company, known for its hourly and longer-term car and van rentals via a mobile app, offers three membership options with varying costs.
No specific reason was disclosed for the sudden closure of Zipcar’s UK operations. Customers interested in using Zipcar in the US can continue to do so, as the company has no plans to shut down operations in the States; however, a US membership will be required.
According to the latest filed accounts, Zipcar’s UK branch had 71 employees at the end of the previous year. The company reported increased losses of £5.7 million in 2024, attributed to a decline in customer trips.
The published accounts in October highlighted the challenges faced by Zipcar due to escalating costs such as electricity and insurance, alongside market fluctuations affecting residual values. Revenue decreased significantly in 2024 compared to the previous year, primarily due to fewer trips and shorter durations, reflecting the ongoing impact of the cost-of-living crisis on discretionary spending demand.
