Residents in certain areas may qualify for payments of £25 during cold weather periods this winter under the Cold Weather Payment program. The scheme has recently recommenced for the 2025/26 season, offering £25 for each seven-day period where the average temperature falls to zero degrees or below.
Individuals can receive multiple Cold Weather Payments if they experience several prolonged periods of freezing temperatures throughout winter. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) administers these payments, which are available to those receiving specific benefits such as Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, or Income-related Employment and Support Allowance.
To claim a Cold Weather Payment, eligible individuals must contact Jobcentre Plus if they are recipients of the mentioned benefits. The scheme will continue until March 31, 2026, with payments automatically deposited into bank accounts within 14 working days for those entitled. Most recipients do not need to apply for the payment, except for those with a baby or a child under five living with them.
Residents can verify if they qualify for a payment in their region by using a postcode checker on the GOV.UK website. It is important to note that Cold Weather Payments are not accessible in Scotland, where they have been replaced by the Winter Heating Payment scheme, offering £59.75.
