“MPs Consider Addressing Prince Andrew’s Future”

Date:

MPs may potentially engage in discussions regarding Prince Andrew’s behavior, his expansive 30-room mansion, and the potential revocation of his dukedom.

The Government has refrained from allocating time in the House of Commons for MPs to deliberate on Andrew’s circumstances, as the Royal family prefers Parliament to focus on pressing matters.

Nevertheless, the issue could arise on days when ministers do not oversee the parliamentary agenda. A source from the Liberal Democrat party hinted at the possibility of using one of their opposition days to enable MPs to address Andrew’s actions.

Prince Andrew is reportedly contemplating vacating his Royal Lodge residence amidst controversy surrounding the nominal rent for the property in Windsor.

The Duke’s brother is in talks with representatives of Charles but is hesitant to give up his home of over two decades, with key concerns revolving around the new residence’s location and financial compensation for expenses incurred at the lodge.

In an attempt to put an end to years of controversy following allegations of sexual misconduct by Virginia Giuffre, Andrew renounced his dukedom and other titles prior to the release of Giuffre’s posthumous memoirs.

Despite vehemently denying the accusations, the prince faced significant criticism related to residing rent-free in the property since 2003.

According to the guidelines in Erskine May, discussions casting aspersions on the conduct of the sovereign, the heir to the throne, or other royal family members are only permissible if based on a substantive motion.

Given the Government’s reluctance to propose a motion for discussing Andrew due to the Royal family’s wishes, an opposition day debate could provide an avenue for MPs to express their concerns.

A source from the Liberal Democrats emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, calling for the Crown Estate and Prince Andrew to testify under oath in Parliament.

The Liberal Democrats have one remaining opposition day in this parliamentary session, with the timing yet to be determined. The source mentioned a decision would be made based on national interest once the government provides a schedule.

The insider from the Lib Dems expressed hope that the King would take decisive action if necessary, emphasizing the importance of alignment between Parliament and the Palace. Although Andrew relinquished the use of his Duke of York title, only an act of Parliament can officially strip him of it.
